Ten Books That Failed To Meet My Expectations

Hello everyone! Today's Top Ten Tuesday (a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) topic is a tad bit negative, as I'm going to list 10 books that have gravely disappointed me since October. BUT WORRY NOT, you are 10000% allowed and welcomed to tell me the reason you loved these novels. No, honestly, I'm interested in different opinions from mine, so discussion is always cherished.

Now, without further ado, let's jump right into these less than stellar novels I've read in the last couple of months.

10. THE NIGHT CIRCUS
by Erin Morgenstern

9. FIRE IN YOU
by Jennifer L. Armentrout

8. MORE HAPPY THAN NOT
by Adam Silvera

7. MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH
by Bethany Griffin

6. THE DEAD HOUSE: THE NADIA TAPES
by Dawn Kurtagitch

5. THE BLACK KEY
by Amy Ewing

4. TAKE THE KEY AND LOCK HER UP
by Ally Carter

3. NEVERNIGHT
by Jay Kristoff

2. THE CALL
by Peadar Ó Guilín

1. TEN THOUSAND SKIES ABOVE
by Claudia Gray

  1. YES to The Night Circus and More Happy Than Not. I feel like everybody raves about both books. I enjoyed The Night Circus but didn't think it was anything special, and More Happy Than Not ended up going in a weird direction.

    1. Omg, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who didn't like either much. The Night Circus WAS magical, but where the heck was the plot?? And More Happy Than not really went into a weird direction. Didn't like the ending, at all.

    1. I seem to be a total black sheep in both cases, so chances you'll love them. At least I really hope so!

  5. I've seen a lot of people like The Night Circus but I don't know, doesn't seem like it would for me? I don't know. Same with Nevernight, have definitely seen mixed thoughts on that.

    1. The Night Circus IS magical and unique with great description, but the plot and the characters? Meh. Nevernight really was a huge let down, and it's also problematic. :|

  6. I didn't get on with the night circus either. I actually DNF'd it because I just couldn't get into it. I was about halfway through and just felt like nothing had even happened yet. Great list!

    1. I stuck it out, but damn, was it boring and dull! No amount of gorgeous description or magic could help that. Thank you!

  7. I love The Night Circus but it certainly isn't a book for everyone! I DNF More Happy Than Not. I was so bored!

    1. Yeah, I think I was looking for the wrong thing going into it - action-packed duels for one haha. Huh, I thought I was the only one who didn't like MHTN!

  8. Night Circus has been on a lot of lists this week and its only making me feel better about my decision not to pick it up.

    1. It's certainly a magical and creative book, but there is no plot OR character development and the romance was AWFUL. I'm confused by the hype, tbh. :(

  11. Fire In You wasn't my favorite in the Wait For You series but I still enjoyed it. I've been on the fence about The Call for a while now and still can't decide whether to pick it up or not.

    1. I definitely didn't hate Fire In You, but I expected something better given that it was the final book in the series. I found The Call pretty boring, but I do hope you'll like it if you pick it up.

  12. The Night Circus was on my list of disappointments this week too! I also tried to read Nevernight but gave up 100 pages in.

  13. I also added The Night Circus to my list because it definitely did not reach my expectations. Nevernight has been sitting on my shelves since it came out and I'm not sure if I'm going to read it any time soon because I've been hearing mixed reviews.I'm currently reading A Thousand Pieces of You and I really don't know if I want to pick up the sequel. 1. TNC was so damn over-hyped - I really don't get all the love it's gotten. Nevernight was pretty bad - super-different from what I expected, with problematic representation, as well. A Thousand Pieces of You was so... boring, tbh. IDEK know why I continued the series.

    1. It started off rather slowly, didn't it? Glad you liked More Happy Than Not, though! Hopefully, I'll have better luck with Silvera's new book.
